Hormones control your body’s every system, and significant periods of hormonal change, from adolescence and the onset of middle age to childbirth and menopause, not only reset your hormones, they can throw them out of whack. The results? Problems like mood swings, lags in energy, and a real nuisance — insomnia.
With decades of valuable combined experience, Dr. Steven Foley and Dr. Jacob Holdren have learned what approaches really work for relieving insomnia, so you can get some well-deserved, high-quality rest.
Insomnia: A life and health disruptor
This inability to sleep can show up in a couple different ways. You might have a hard time getting to sleep from the moment your head hits the pillow, or you might fall asleep just fine initially, but awaken in the middle of the night and struggle to get back to sleep.
Either way, insomnia leads to:
- Daytime exhaustion
- Inability to concentrate
- Anxiety and depression
- Memory issues
- Impaired driving
The agonies of sleep problems are cumulative, too. The less rest you get, the more tired you become, and all of a sudden you find yourself dreading bedtime because it’s become a source of stress rather than comfort.
Lack of sleep is also connected to a higher risk for developing serious health conditions, including hypertension and diabetes.
Though men’s quality of rest can be affected by hormones, women’s sleep has been known to be disrupted by several factors that shift hormones significantly — the menstrual cycle, childbirth, and menopause.
Finding out if you have hormonally driven insomnia
The Regenerative Health and Wellness Medical Center offers testing so we can get to the root of your sleep problems. When you visit us, we take a blood draw from you that’s sent to a lab to be thoroughly analyzed.
If the results from your blood panel reflect hormonal shifts related to insomnia, we create a customized treatment plan whose centerpiece is an innovative and effective therapeutic approach known as bioidentical hormone therapy, or BHRT.
How does bioidentical hormone therapy effectively combat insomnia?
Bioidentical hormones are derived from plants, but they’re biologically exactly like the estrogen and testosterone you used to produce in sufficient amounts. When your body falls short of producing enough, we can replace your lost natural hormones with these.
Bioidentical hormone therapy is safe and has been prescribed for nearly 1.5 million menopausal women, for example.
What’s a bioidentical hormone treatment regimen like?
When we prescribe BHRT to help you with a hormonally-induced sleep problem, we determine your dosage precisely, and we comfortably insert a very small pellet containing the BHRT into a place in your buttock or at the top of your hip area that’s been fully numbed.
An appointment lasts, on average, less than half-an-hour, and you’ll feel the effects of the treatment anywhere from 3 to 10 days afterward. The pellet contains all the hormones you’ll need for the next several months, and releases them gradually.
We see you on a regular basis to check on how you’re doing and to determine if any dosage tweaks are needed, but we’re always available to answer questions about your bioidentical hormone plan.
